Quantum computing, HPC, Optimization, Algorithms

Full Professor at the University of Oviedo (Department of Computer Science) and Head of the Quantum and High-Performance Computing (QHPC) research group. His work spans high-performance computing and related areas, with a sustained publication record.

José Ranilla holds a degree in Computer Science from the Polytechnic University of Valencia (Spain) and a PhD in Computer Engineering from the University of Oviedo (Spain). His research focuses on the development of high-performance real-time algorithms and their practical applications, spanning formal methods, mathematical modelling, machine learning, and intelligent data analysis, with particular attention to energy-efficient computing and complex industrial problems. In recent years, these research lines have increasingly converged toward quantum computing, especially quantum machine learning (QML) and quantum simulation, and their application to biomedical signal analysis, with emphasis on cardiovascular disease detection. He has led and participated in numerous competitive R&D projects and technology transfer activities, including sustained collaborations with industry. He serves on national scientific and technical advisory bodies and has contributed to institutional initiatives in high-performance and quantum computing. He has also held scientific coordination roles and participated in national research networks. His publication record includes a substantial number of peer-reviewed contributions in international journals and conferences. He has organized special sessions at international conferences and served on organizing and program committees of scientific events. He regularly acts as reviewer and evaluator for research funding agencies. He is co-author of high-performance open-source software packages and registered software products, and has served on editorial boards of international journals, including as guest editor for special issues.
