Full Professor at the University of Oviedo and member of the QHPC group. His research spans computability, machine learning, fuzzy measures, computational algebra, and applications of quantum computing.
Elías F. Combarro holds degrees in Mathematics (1997, 2nd National Award for Academic Excellence) and in Computer Engineering (2002, 1st National Award for Academic Excellence) from the University of Oviedo. After several research stays at Novosibirsk State University (Russia), he earned a Ph.D. in Mathematics (Oviedo, 2001) with a thesis supervised by Andrey Morozov and Consuelo Martínez. Since 2023, he has been a Full Professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Oviedo. He has published 50+ papers on computability theory, machine learning, fuzzy measures, and computational algebra, as well as two textbooks on quantum computing. His current research focuses on applications of quantum computing to algebraic, optimization, and AI problems.
From July 2020 to January 2021, he worked at CERN openlab as an associate collaborator, returning to CERN for another stay in September and October 2022. He represented Spain on the advisory board of the CERN Quantum Technology Initiative from 2021 to 2024. In September and October 2024, he was a visiting professor in the Physics Department at Harvard University. He currently serves on the advisory board of SheQuantum.
